The program, called "Driving for Education", was launched Monday by Ocean City Chevrolet. Ed Mintz stressed that "Driving for Education" is a no-pressure/no purchase-nccessary opportunity for families, friends and other members of the community to help earn high tech educational tools for their schools. "They simply visit Ocean City Chevrolet and test drive any new vehicle during their school’s desig nated Test Drive Week," he said. "When a predetermined number of ‘proof of drive’ certificates are turned in, the schools may then choose from 27 different educa tional awards, ranging from Apple computer systems to Magnavox audio/visual equipment, En cyclopedia Britannica, Texas Instru ments calculators and Wilson sport ing goods. "It’s as simple as that," he stated. Lauded by the U. S. Department of Education and praised by gov ernors coast to coast, this unique "Partnership for Education" program is "a real life-saver for America’s financially strapped institutions," Roger B. Porter, assistant for eco nomic and domestic policy to Presi dent Bush, said. "Chevrolet leader ship in working to improve educa tion will not only help individual schools and students, but also in spire other business to become in volved." South principal Sellers goes to school on leadership skills vjne DiunswitK \_’>uiuy scnooi au ministrator returned to the class room this fall to expand her man agement and leadership skills with new information in areas such as law and curriculum through the Principals’ Executive Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Sue Sellers, principal of South Brunswick High School, was among 32 principals and superintendents at the Institute of Government. When they completed the 25-day program October 8, the principals were con sidered to be more effective school leaders. The course requires participants to complete 160 hours of classroom work during four months. Besides law and curriculum, other major areas of study include personnel management, communications, self knowledge, technology and personal development Participants must read, complete study guides and discuss the con tents of 13 books, 80 articles and 30 case studies assigned by the 61 fac ulty members. They also must write papers on their educational philoso phy and school leadership. Each must develop a long-range plan to improve an aspect of his or her school. "The program’s rigorous manage ment education seeks long-lasting changes in the principal as a leader," said Robert Phay, program director and William R. Kenan, Jr„ professor of public law and government. "We leach the importance of raising ex pectations for students, faculty and parents; how to increase school ef fectiveness; and the need to develop and implement long-range school goals with the heavy involvement of faculty, staff and parents." With the graduation of this group * 1,119 of the state’s public school ad ministrators — including 89 super intendents from three separate su perintendents’ programs — have completed the Principals’ Executive Program since it began in 1984.
